I take photographs purely for the pleasure and the pursuit. Having a love of Scotland and its landscape I am naturally drawn towards the Highlands and islands.

The vast majority of the images you see on my website are premeditated, the end result of a process that begins with an idea or a perceived image in my mind. Position of the Sun, time of year, dusk or dawn, wind, tides and weather windows can all play vital roles in the creation of an image. The success of each image is ultimately down to all these elements coming together in the right place and at the right time. Of course being in the right place and time is very often easier said than done, but is essentially the key to successful landscape photography.

I find it far more rewarding using film as opposed to the digital format. I really enjoy the process of creating a photograph rather than making a digital representation of one. More importantly it captures the nuances of colour and light much more accurately and forces a far more disciplined approach to the composition of an image.

It is vitally important to me to keep things natural in my photographs. I strive to capture the scene as close to the way I experienced it at the time. I will only use digital editing to fix blemishes such as dust etc. Photoshop is NOT a substitute for good photographic technique.

I have always found an affinity with the panoramic format and find it a much more natural way of viewing the landscape and for capturing the beauty of Scotland's land and light.
